Most forgotten
What people forget to pack for Rome
Something to cover your shoulders
St Peter's Basilica and many churches turn away bare shoulders and short skirts or shorts. A light scarf solves it.
A refillable bottle
Rome's nasoni street fountains run with cold drinking water all over the city.
Shoes for cobblestones
The sampietrini paving is uneven and slippery when wet. Leave the thin soles at home.
A sun hat in summer
July and August average 30°C, and the Forum and Palatine have very little shade.
Questions
Rome packing, answered
What is the dress code for the Vatican and St Peter's?
Cover your shoulders and knees. Sleeveless tops, short skirts and shorts can be refused at the entrance, so carry a scarf or wear trousers or a long skirt.
Do I need a power adapter for Rome?
Italy uses Type C, F and L plugs at 230V. From the US, UK or Australia you need an adapter; Type C fits most Italian sockets.
What should I wear in Rome in summer?
Light, breathable clothes, a sun hat and sunscreen. Highs average 30°C in July and August. Bring a scarf for church visits.
Is Rome tap water safe to drink?
Yes. The nasoni fountains around the city give free, cold drinking water.
