Most forgotten

What people forget to pack for Iceland

A swimsuit

Every town has a geothermal pool, and the Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon need one too. You will swim outside even in snow.

Microspikes

From November to March the paths to waterfalls and viewpoints turn to ice. Slip-on spikes weigh almost nothing.

A sleep mask

In June the sun barely sets: Reykjavík gets around 21 hours of daylight, and hotel curtains are not always blackout.

A refillable bottle

Icelandic tap water is clean and cold, so there is no need to buy bottled water.

Questions

Iceland packing, answered

What should I wear in Iceland in winter?

Layers: a thermal base layer, a fleece or wool mid layer, and a windproof, waterproof shell on top. Add a warm hat, gloves and waterproof boots with grip. Highs in December and January average around 1°C, and the wind makes it feel colder.

Do I need a power adapter for Iceland?

Iceland uses Type C and Type F plugs at 230V, 50Hz, the same as most of Europe. From the US, UK or Australia you will need an adapter. Phone and laptop chargers handle 230V; check hair tools before you plug them in.

What should I pack for Iceland in summer?

Summer is mild, with highs around 11–13°C, but it rains often. Pack a waterproof jacket and trousers, a warm layer for the evenings, hiking shoes, and a sleep mask for the long daylight.

What do I need for the Blue Lagoon?

A swimsuit, and a hair tie or plenty of conditioner: the silica-rich water dries hair out. Book ahead, and check what your ticket includes before packing a towel.
